Producer Matt Wyatt and Lilly Bechtel

Hi. Hello.

Night Teacher is the project of singer-songwriter Lilly Bechtel, whose haunting voice and poetic lyrics weave elements of doom-folk and alt-rock to create an experience that listeners have described as part seance, part lullaby.

Since the 2020 release of her debut record Night Teacher, Bechtel has been featured on NPR, won Best Song in the Music with a Conscience Series, and was noted by the music magazine Relix as an “artist to pay attention to.” In February 2023 Bechtel released an EP, Dear Ellen, and her second full-length album, Year of the Snake, will be released in October 2025.

Music writer Robb Donker describes Night Teacher’s 2021 single ‘Even When It’s Bent’: "producer Matt Wyatt's percussive tones sort of feel like they are improvised, as if Wyatt found things around the house to play with, which is what (for me) persists in making their texture so organic and interesting… (Lilly) Bechtel's vocal aesthetic works perfectly as a storyteller; there is at once a sage presence in her powerful lilt, but it is also one that feels broken- as hopelessness and hope play a fierce game of tug of war."

Since the spring of 2021, Bechtel has begun to tour the U.S., and in April 2023 the Night Teacher music video, Desert Psalm, made by an independent, all-female film crew in the south of Texas, was featured in American Dance FestivalMovies by Movers” and was awarded Best Song in the Experimental Film and Music festival.

In a time when so many of us are seeking what power might emerge from grief, Night Teacher’s music thrives inside that question, that'“fierce tug of war between hope and hopelessness” that results in the kind of beauty that can only be drawn from shadow, and songs that can only be sung after it doesn’t all work out.
