Hi. Hello.
Night Teacher is the project of singer-songwriter Lilly Bechtel, whose haunting voice and poetic lyrics weave elements of doom-folk and alt-rock to create an experience that listeners have described as part seance, part lullaby.
Lilly is also a published poet and certified, trauma-informed yoga instructor with 15 years of experience offering creative mindfulness workshops. Her poetry and non-fiction has appeared in Poetry, elephant journal, The Huffington Post, Barrow Street Journal, The Faster Times, The Brooklyn Rail, and USA Today, among others, and her work and music has been noted in The New York Times and featured on NPR.
Once, she was part of a ladies arm wrestling league that swept the nation. Another time, she lived in New York and wrote about what it might mean to have a vampire fetish. In July 2020, Lilly completed an MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson and in 2024 she was the recipient of a fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. Since returning to her hometown of Charlottesville she has continued to perform and tour with her band Night Teacher, as well as offer creative mindfulness workshops and one-on-one editing feedback and mentorship to writers and musicians. Lilly’s practice as an artist, as well as her professional background as a teacher, enrich her ability to support others in moving through their shadows and finding their way towards healing.
